I am trying to figure out what I am doing wrong!!! I have a Stanley metal front entrance door. My house is a '54 cape cod with shake shingle siding. The storm door was ripped off during a wind storm and the regulator screws pulled out, damaging the door jamb. Since the damage was not that bad, I filled the holes with wood putty and primed and painted it.

The old storm door a total loss, I installed a new Larson full-view storm door which came with two heavy-duty regulators (top and bottom). Since the screws did not match up where I had made the hole repairs earlier, I proceeded. I made sure the door frame was level/square. The storm door would never latch by itself in spite of 99 adjustments to the regulators or hinges.

Phase II- 30-40 mph wind gust whipped the door open. Regulator rods bent into a slight "v". Screws held, but cracked the wood in door jamb, top and bottom.

The entrance door was a pre-hung. I bought a new jamb at Home Depot and removed the interior wall door trim. I am ready to remove the entrance door to replace the door jamb. Is there something obvious I am missing? I do not want to have to go through all this again!

You'll need to remove any exterior trim that is nailed to the jamb as well. Install the new jamb with screws, not nails. Happy routing to get the hinge mortises correct.
