I am attempting to remove a wall in the middle of my house that runs between two rooms in the center of the house. The wall is below my attic which contains a small bedroom directly above. How do I support the upstairs? I was in mind to put a 4/4 beam across the area where the wall was and installing two decorative posts on each end....will that be enough?????

You may want to check out the Architecture and Codes forum. Even though your question deals with a wall, that forum tends to deal a lot with structural issues. From my own experiences with fixing the joists and girders in my crawlspace, I can say that, in general, 4x4s are useless for any kind of support work. I've got a 4x6 in place in my crawlspace, but that's sistering an existing girder AND it's spanning a very short distance, about 4 feet.
