Like a fool, I went out and bought a whole kitchen's worth of drywall. Then I did a little reading on the subject and realized there is something called firecode drywall, which is what I don't have. Also that the firecode is required for kitchens. Can anyone confirm this? Does it look as if I'll be dragging 12 sheets of drywall back to my local Home Depot?

Fire code drywall is simply 5/8" sheetrock. Depending on where you live will determine if you need this in your kitchen. I've personally never heard of a fire code in a kitchen. If you think you want or need it check it out. But other wise I would stick with 1/2".
