If you're talking about the outside unit, turn the power off, get any kind of household spray cleaner, saturate the coil and wash it out with a hose and nozzle. Try not to get water in the fan motot tho. If you're refering about the indoor coil, its not going to be that easy. If its superficial dirt, wire brush it when DRY. If its built up crud from eons ago, a wire brush is just going to remove the outer surface. Inside the fins its still just as cruddy. You can try a non-foaming cleaner and even some diluted chlorox mix. You'll get some gook outof course but at thwe same time your drain outlet in the pan will probably get plugged and the pan will overflow. So you can see that using a garden hose inside is going to make one big mess. Its almost impossible to do a good cleaning job on the inside unit and its all dependent on just how dirty the coil is. To do the job right, have a tech come out, remove the coil outside, spray it and flush the heck out of it, and reinstall it. Costs you more but its done right! Again, if its not real plugged up, wire brush it best you can. If its dirty enough to be taken outside, then its also time to clean the blower as well. As for dust inside the plenum, don't disturb it or you'll have dust throughout the house. If its real dirty, get a duct- cleaning pro. Have fun.
