If your textured ceiling is painted, you will need to use a taping knife first. Then use a spray bottle to moisten what is left, let it soak in, when soft, scrape again to remove. The trick is not to cut into the sheetrock.
If it is not painted (normal), you can experiment. Try to moisten with spray bottle first, let soak, and scrape to remove. Try it without moistening, and see which is easier.
After removing texture you will have to work on the seams, and a lot of sanding will be required to get a smooth ceiling (pole sander is required).
