I'm renovating my kitchen and have stripped off the plaster and lath down to the studs. Eventually, I want to put drywall up.

But the studs are 100 year old 2x4s and aren't exactly the smoothest surface on which to nail drywall. Any suggestions for ways to provide myself with a smooth nailing surface? I've considered "sistering" each old 2x4 with a new 2x4. Any better ways to do this?

The beauty of drywall is you do not need a smooth surface to attach it to. I have worked on jobs that we have attached sheetrock to rough cut 2x4s (they are actually 2"x4") after removing lath and plaster and it ends up flat as can be.

I would recommend you use sheetrock screws not nails. Better holding power on dry wood.
