Our school has a problem. Our gym was built in the late 1930's and permanent bleachers were installed. It has hardwood flooring that has been refinished every other year since it was built. We would like to take out the bleachers to make the floor bigger so it would be regulation width. The problem is that there is a lip of about 1/2 inch where the bleachers were all the way around the court. Is there any way to get rid of this lip without sanding for days?

The court may orginally have been the same thickness as the surrounding flooring under the bleachers, and has just been sanded lower over the years with each refinishing.
I don't think that there is any way to build up the court without resurfacing with new hardwood, but a good contractor grade power planer (about $130 each) --or several of them -- followed by finish sanding would be much faster than just heavy sanding under the old bleachers to level it all out.
