I have a gas furnace and had no heat and the pilot is out. I turned the knob from "on" to "pilot" and tried to light it but nothing. I can smell gas and when I push down on knob I can hear it. Do I need to hold the knob down when I light it? What could cause the pilot not to light?
Thanks,
Rick

match,a short match and straw--or one of those long bar-b-que lighters.Get the flame going, set unit to pilot, push down and hold until pilot lights.KEEP holding down for 1 minute.Turn valve to on.If pilot does not stay running after 1 minute--buy a "T" couple and follow the above procedure.PDF

If you are from CT (or any other state that has an attachment on the top of the hot water tank) there is a button in the back of the "switch" as they call it. When looking at the top if there is a braket that is connected to the thermal coupling on the bottom (where you light the pilot). If you push it in it allows you to light the pilot. The purpose of it is if the pipe gets too hot it trips, but it does not dignify any type of problem only service calls.
