Problem:

The air flow from the fan (inside the house) that forces air through the heat exchanger (that is, the fins that transfer the heat to the heating ducts) is restricted. A service repairman told me that the restriction is due to a layer of dust on the underside of the fins and must be removed and cleaned.

I suspect that the problem arose because of incorrect repairs done about 4 months ago and I am asking for comments.

The sequence of events was the following:

In about Nov. 2001, the motor for the fan packed it in and I called to have it replaced. At the time I recall the repairman talking to his supervisor about whether the pulley was the right size. At the same time I had an annual service check done on the whole system.

Subseqently, I noticed that something was not quite right - there was a new noise with the compressor and the supplementary heat - oil was kicking in when it had not for a few years ( I live in a very temperate part of Canada). I called to have it checked. It took about 4 months to get it checked out for a variety of reasons unrelated to my question.

The first thing that was done was a new pulley was put on the motor to increase the air flow. The repairman also tried blowing out the dust with compressed gas. Neither of these cleared the dust (the fins are in an A-frame design and the whole section is siliconed on the bottom edges.

I am wondering if the fact that the wrong pulley was put on the new motor led to the current dust problem? I have always changed the air filter very regularly.
