i painted my walls in the bedroom mother of pearl. i then measured and marked with a pencil the lines i wanted to paint. i taped the lines and painted the yellow stripes. i took of the tape and went to erase the lines and they won't erase! i have tried just a regular pencil eraser and an art gum eraser and don't know what else to try! anyone have any ideas on how i can get the pencil marks off?
thanks.

Hopefully this pushes your post back to the top and maybe mikejmerritt or one of the oldtimers/gurus here reads your post, they might have a solution for you. Sorry I can't help at the moment other than a quick site search.

Unix,

I'm assuming you used a #2 pencil. If it was a different type of lead, let us know.

This question may seem trivial but it is key to helping you. Did you put the tape up to the pencil lines or over the pencil lines? If you put the tape over the lines so they were protected, they should just wash off.

If, however, you put the tape up to the lines so the lines were exposed, then you have painted over the lines. Pencil lines can be a bear for painters, especially DIYers. Pencil lines bleed though most paints.

If the lines were not painted over, erasing would smear them. If they aren't smeared, you've painted over them and the lines are showing thru the paint. The fix depends on how dark/light the lines were and how well your paint covers. It may be as easy as just another coat of the yellow. Or you may need to prime with a stain blocker, then repaint.

it was just a number 2 pencil and i put the tape over the pencil so it hasn't been painted over. so can i just use a gentle soap and water mix to wash them off? erasing them is kind of smearing them and is going nowhere fast.
thanks so much.

Unless the mother of pearl paint is unwashable (some glazes will also wash off) then yes, soap and water should do it. I'm not sure just what you used (terms vary across the country and across the world). Try the soap/water in an inconspicous spot first.

Some flat paints are hard to wash.

In future just dont use pencil at all...use a long strip of ply or mdf the same width as the tape as a guide..

Why use pencil lines at all? Use the tape as your line and make sure they are straight with a level before painting. When the stripes are painted, drybrush the edges of the tape and rip it off.
