I just peeled off 3 layers of ugly wallpaper that covered plaster. The plaster beneath isn't in great condition--it's pretty uneven, with bumps and holes from nails, etc. What's the best way to prep this before painting? Will drywall mud work to smooth out the surface? Any other suggestions?

jp,
Are you sure its plaster? No offense meant with this question. We get a lot of questions from people that really don't know or understand.
If it is plaster, sorry I can't help. I do not have any experience with plaster.
