Help! My bathroom vanity is made of wood that only has been stained and we apply oil to it several times a year. It is very porus. I spilled some hair color on it, which it soaked up immediately. How can I remove the stain or at least lighten it?

Thanks for any info.

Please accept my Sympathy.

You've just proven what I've been telling people for years - oil finish offer little or no protection to the wood underneath.

Unfortunately, the answer to your problem will probably involve some serious sanding, after you use a solvent to remove as much oil as possible, and after you bleach the piece (the whole thing - or you'll never get a uniform color back).

Lacquer thinner can be used tocut the oil off. The grit off teh sandpaper will depend on what the wood is - the harder the wood, the finer the sandpaper.

The bleach would be a two-part bleach. Look for it by that description at home centers adnpaint stores.
