I want to build an end cabinet for a computer desk to hold a printer and scanner. I considered using maple because I could match grain and stain it to match the existing desk. I noticed that aspen is considerably less than maple and should show some grain after finishing. I don't know how well aspen works for constructing and finishing. Will I be able to finish aspen well enough similar to other hardwoods? I am not sure if aspen is usually discouraged for furniture use or not.

Any input or suggestions are appreciated.

thanks

Aspen is a good price-conscious choice - it's also a beautiful wood when finished.

While it's similar in looks to maple, it works much more easily, being a softer wood.

Have fun!

I just built 6 drawer boxes with aspen. As George said, it's easy to work with.

Hello,

Aspen works easily but can take stains/finishes at different rates causing blotching. It's a good Idea to use some kind of pre stain conditioner or other method to avoid this problem.
