I have a brick fireplace with a wood surround. I have removed the surround and would like to either paint the brick or cover it with tile. Painting it would be my first choice, but how do I go about doing this and is there any downside? Thanks for any suggestions.

I have painted fireplaces of mine in the past and have regreted it later. Unless the brick is really nasty. Preserve it. Otherwise if you must paint it. Any enamel paint will work. Enamel is best because it is the easiest to keep clean.
