I am installing a complete new kitchen in the new home I am building, and we have decided on ceramis floor tile. I have always thought you would lay the floor tile after you install the cabinets, and then install the appliances. I saw a post on this site about floor tile, and counter height in a remedel and it got me thinking. Do I install the backer board and floor tile under the dishwasher too? Will there be a problem with the height of the counter tops, and the added depth of the flooring?

Help!!!!!!!!

My husband and I bought a fixer-upper and was going to make an upstairs room into a bedroom with closet. I deceided it was too small and we are turning it into a bathroom with walk-in shower instead (like in some campgrounds). The closet/shower (5'4'X5'4")already has sheet rock on the walls. Do we need to rip off the sheet rock or can we install backerboard, tiles etc. on top of it? We need to be very budget conscious. This area has sheet rock on exposed beams and a skylight in the ceiling also. Is this going to be a problem? Will we have to tile the 11' high ceiling or can we leave it as is?

From what I understand, you can install backerboard over the sheetrock and then do your tile. If you do this, you will have a 1/2 to deal with at the edges of the backerboard. I would remove the sheetrock to about 6 feet or so and replace it with backerboard. This will give you a smoother transition to the sheetrock. Just make sure you remove the sheetrock to 6 inches beyond where you think will get hit with water. You do not need to tile to the ceiling. You can stop wherever you want and use bullnose tile pieces to make a nice stopping transition. I hope that I was able to help.

Hi -

We recently tiled our kitchen floor (existing house) and ran into the same problem. The counters were already installed and dishwasher in place. We also had to install a concrete board subfloor and then install the tiles on top - unfortunately their was not enough gap to place the tile underneath the dishwasher too. We were able to tile up to the base of the dishwasher and put a cornered running board over the edge to give it a clean and finished look. I am sure this is not the best way to do it, but it looks great. Hope it helps you.

It Could Be. I just redid my kitchen and I did backerboard on the whole floor then installed cabinets on the backerboard then tile. I tiled under the dishwasher and the dishwasher fit's perfect, and by perfect I mean there is no room to spare under the counter top. Sorry I can't give you a definite answer I would suggest you carefully measure the height of the dishwasher and the space under the cabinet, you should be ok tiling under the dishwasher but it can be close.

I really appreciate your response. :) What you had to say makes perfect sence. We will likely rip out the lower portion of the sheet rock and install backer board in its place. It should come out to the same thickness that way. Any idea how to construct the floor of the shower? We are concerned because it is on an upper level.
