Has anyone done this ? The existing paper is sound, not peeling off anywhere, not a vinyl and I hope could be used instead of lining paper. Should I paint it with dilute PVA first ?

I have in the past wallpapered over existing wallpaper on my customers request..The results were so good that you wouldnt know if they had been properly lined or not!!
The existing paper must be stuck soundly to the walls with no overlapping seams otherwise these will show through..The best way to see how the existing paper behaves when wetted is to soak once with cold water..I use a garden spray cannister for this.. If this causes excessive blistering/bubbles that will not dry back (unlikley) then it is best to completly strip the paper... If however the paper dries back to normal then there is no real reason why a good standard can be achieved..
If you suspect that the walls are in bad condition underneath then there is a good chance that they will need to be crosslined with lining paper....In a lot of cases you will be no better off with lining paper as opposed to using what you already have!!One thing to remember...Do not hang the paper in alignment with the old seams..
I know that others here will disagree but as far as I am concerned....The proof of the pudding is in the eating!!

Of course...The next time you redcorate you may have two layers of paper to strip...Take that into consideration

Should I paint it with dilute PVA first ?

No.
