I HAVE A VERY AN ANTIQUE WOOD BUFFET WHICH I DONT KNOW WHAT THE WOOD OR FINISH ON IT IS. THE FINISH IS BAD SO I WAS GOING TO STRIP IT AND REFINISH IT. BUT DO YOU THINK PAINTING IT CREAM OR WHITE WOULD LOOK BETTER AND WHICH COLOR WOULD YOU RECCOMEND? OR WHICH STAIN INSTEAD?

I really don't think you want to paint a nice antique buffet, especially if it has any value. Maybe you should have it appraised, or at least call one your local antique dealers(I know you have some) and ask them to come out and take a look at it, because it MAY be for sale. Or visit your shops to find something similar for a comparison. You will then get some ideas for staining it if that is what you decide.
I say all this because woodworkers appreciate the wood grain of a fine piece of craftsmanship.

Aside from Fred's comments (with which I agree) it would be impossible for me (or anyone else) to make generalized suggestions in answer to your questions.

I don't know the style of the furniture or your house, so I can't suggest any particular color should you decide to paint.

I don't know any of the above or the type of wood you're dealing with, so I can't suggest a stain...
