Hello, I'm trying to find out what I need to do to wallpaper over textured walls. One friend suggested paper liner and another said that stuff was a royal pain in the ... to use. Is my only other alternative to sand the whole thing down? that seems like a lot of work. Isn't there any kind of primer I could paint on the walls to make the texture fade away? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Diane

You can sand the texture away. You would want to start with a stripping tool with a blade to handle the big stuff, then switch to sandpaper. You also have to use skill with this technique. If you attack it the way most homeowners do, you can end up with walls that are no longer smooth. You should take your time and ensure that there is equal sanding on every square inch or you will end up with a wall full of hills and valleys. This can be done and I suppose in the Zen world, is the most noble.

Another option is bridging material. You can get it at home improvement stores or online at www.wallliner.com. As far as a pain, I don't agree. You don't have a pattern to match. Make an error? Over trim and find yourself with a 1/4 inch gap by the window? Not spend enough time getting the seams right? Who cares! Break out the joint compound and fix your errors. The liner will eventually be painted or papered over, so if there is a perfect "wallpaper" for beginners to try, wall liner is it.

Both methods have advantages and disadvantages, think it over and decide which method is best for you. :)
