 I saw a kitchen table with a wood base and a concrete top and I fell in love with the concept as I do not want a table with a wood surface. My husband and I asked a friend (who has a hard wood floor business) to build us a table with a beautiful red perduke(spelling?) wood. The table is in our home waiting for the surface to be completed. However, it does have a 2 inch wood edge on all 4 sides on top (with the original idea to pour in the concrete and not work with a form). Since attending a Home and Garden Show recently and talking with concrete contractors, I have changed my mind on the concrete. The surface I'm envisioning is smooth, not shiny though. I want a flat elephant gray color (or another light color that will look good with the red wood). I thought I could get what I wanted with concrete , but haven't found a contractor who can supply a sample that looks quite right. I'm frustrated and looking for help. Please send ideas, options, suggestions. All are welcome. Thank you. D. Dersham:

Concrete will certainly make for durability.

Items affecting the exact color of the finished product include the brand of cement used in the concrete, the type of sand (and the amount) among other things.

If teh colors you've gotten are very close, there are stains made especially for concrete that can be used to adjust the color. Here's the web site for one:

The wood, by the way, is Padauk (from Africa).
