Want to paint and antique glaze dark oak kitchen cabinets so that they resemble the high end painted cabinets seen in magazines. Want the cabinets to be a soft white with darker tone in the routed vertical grooves and drawer edges.
Does anyone know how to do this? Would gel stain work better than tinted glazing liquid? I'd like to finish with a water based polyurethane. Will that work over an oil based glaze or stain? Any advice on glaze or stain color will also be appreciated.

If you want to finish with a water based poly, you're going to have to go water base all the way.
Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams (to name two I'm certain about) both offer water based glazing compounds that will give you the effect you're after.
