IN MY DAUGHTERS ROOM, WE HAVE A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THE WALLS. THE WALLS ARE PANELED AND THEN A LAYER OF JOINT COMPOUND OVER THE PANELING, AND THEN PAINT. NOW THERE ARE SMALL HAIRLINE CRACKS IN A FEW DIFFERENT SPACES. I DO NOT WANT TO TEAR DOWN THE WALLS, SO I WAS WONDERING IF I COULD WALLPAPER OVER THEM, OR WILL THE CRACKS COME THROUGH THE WALLPAPER EVENTUALLY. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT, AND IDEAS, SOLUTIONS,I AM ALL EARS. THANKS, LINDA

Your situation actually has a very specific solution that many are unaware of. This is how I would attack it. I would go over any cracked areas with joint compoud and make it all as smooth as possible. This is the point when you want to make sure all the nails are flush in the paneling and add extra nails to any loose or bowed areas. Next, wash the paneling well to remove grease or oil. Now you are ready for the next step, bridging material.
Measure the area just as if you were going to order wallpaper. Find out how many rolls you need. Then you order the same amount of rolls of bridging material. You can find it at home improvent stores or online at www.wallliner.com (http://www.wallliner.com/wall_liner2.html) . I prefer the wallliner.com product because it is cheaper than store bought and has a smoother finish. You apply this according to the directions just like wallpaper.
Once you are done, you are ready for painting or more wallpaper. If you need assistance with roll estimation visit my estimation page (http://www.wallpaperinstaller.com/wallpaper_estimate.html) or call 800-221-5798 if you decide to purchase through the website I mentioned.
