I've stripped some of my kitchen cabinets of four layers of paint, and discovered some nice wood underneath. However, I think I have disturbed perhaps several layers of lead-based paint. I have 2 preschool-age children, and 1 infant. What do I do now? My home was built in 1951... assuming it is lead-based paint... is there any inexpensive way of continuing this project safely?

Marcie:

There's very little chance the stripping itself released any potential hazard, evenif the paint is lead based.

Sanding, however, is a whole other ball game. That could prove potentially dangerous IF the paint is lead based.

Your local health department should provide testing services to determine the content of the paint. If you don't want to go through the procedures there (it could take up to several months for results), here are some DoItYourSelf testing kits by various mfgs.
