I like the look of the polywood shutters, but not the high cost. Can wood cafe shutters be used in the same way for an inside mount? Three windows face south and one will be on the north side.

You're right though about being expensive. I got the faux wood 2 inch blinds from Home Depot instead. Very similar look and MUCH easier to install than the shutters. They are made by Levelor for Home Depot and are called DesignView. I don't think the cafe shutters would work, because your windows won't be exactly square. Part of the reason the plantation shutters are so expensive is because they are custom made for your window.
Lots of Luck,

We have had pine shutters on three south facing windows for a number of years, without any major problems.
The wood does dry out, and the louvres eventually start to break off, but if you keep an eye on them and make the fixes before too many get broken, they can easily be repaired.
We've gotten at least 10 years out of these shutters, so I don't think they owe us anything.
