I have bought a Philips 27 inch tv a few months ago and now when ever i am watching tv or a movie the picture starts getting distorted with a green haze coming out of the left side of the screen and a purplish red haze coming out of the right side of the screen. As soon as it is turned out it goes into one of these distortion spells and after awhile it dies down. Anything I can do to fix it.

I need a model number and a model year to help you here. I assume that this is a 27" CRT television?

Here's a website that offers a lot of good information:

Need a service manual? Try this site:

That clarifies things a bit.

Sounds like the problem is in the automatic degaussing circuit on the picture tube. There is a large coil of wire that surrounds the picture tube which is activated with a shot of household AC current when the set is first turned on. It produces a brief magnetic field around the screen to remove any residual magnetism. This is needed to ensure the picture tube reproduces a pure color.

Some information here:
http://an.hitchcock.org/repairfaq/REPAIR/F_tvfaq1.html#TVFAQ_014

This circuit is supposed to shut down BEFORE the picture tube actually warms up and displays a picture. If something has disturbed the timing circuit on the degaussing ring, the process will continue when the picture is being displayed.

This is where I recommend you look for the problem.
