I just went through this. Go to your home center and get some "floor adhesive remover" It is in a quart or gallon can. spread it on with a paint brush fairly heavy, let it sit for the time listed on the can, don't short cut it (said from experience). It makes a mess when you clean it off!!! have lots of rags and good rubber gloves. Make sure you have pleanty of ventilation (it is very potent!!) If you have a half mask respirator use it, this stuff is not good to breathe. It works fantastic . Good Luck!!

Some linoleum glues are not water soluble, and if that's the case, you can leave it on there. Thin set will adhere to it. Just make sure you scrape up anything that's loose.
Make a small puddle of water and leave it there for half an hour. If the glue loosens you can remove it with water. If not, leave it there.
