I've looked on this site but couldn't find anything about painting a piece of furniture that has already been stained and given a coat of polyurethane. What steps would I need to take and do I need to strip the finish first in order to paint it? I was also hoping that I could get some tips on creating a "distressed" look with the paint.

I just had to answer the TooltimeGal! You've always been one of my favorites.
Well, you will probably get a couple different opinions on your task.
Persoanlly, I would skip the stripping and just lightly sand the piece (200 grit) to give the paint something to hold on to. The poly has already sealed the wood, so you just need the paint to sticlk. You may want to use a primer first, which will help prevent possible chipping of the paint.
I'll defer the distressing advice to someone else.
