I have an old mantel chime clock. It has been in a basement for about twenty years. The surface has a black shiny finish which
has years of crud accumulated on the surface. I would like to know how to clean without destroying the original finish.

VM&P naphtha (from your paint store) will remove accumulated grit, grime, grease and oil and will not harm any finish.
Use with 0000 steel wool for the relaly stubborn spots.
Naphtha is flammable - use with caution.
