We have recently painted a design on the top of our kitchen table with interior latex paint. Our question is about what we should use to ensure a durable finish and to prevent paint chipping and wear. Thanks for your help.

My personal favorite would be Minwax water-based polyurethane. Never tried it in the application you're talking about, so you might try it on scrap first, but can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work.

Please try a scrap first - some poly's just don't like going over another type of finish.

Another thought (or two). Standard poly's are NOT clear - they have an amber cast. Open the can and look in - you'll see the color i'm talking about.

Minwax Polycrylic may be a better choice. Minwax won't tell you this but it can be applied over a painted surface; it's water clear (clear as water) and doesn't yellow with age.
