I have a kitchen wall that is knotty pine wood. It has turned darker and I am going to redo the kitchen. I need a easy way to brighten up the wood. Could it be wiped down with a lye water, a solvent or does it need to be stripped or sanded.

Depending on the age of the paneling, it may be finished with amber shellac. This was a ocmmon method of obtaining the 'orangey' color of knotty pine that was popular back in the 50's & 60's.

If this is the case, the finish can be removed with a 50:50 mixture of lacquer thinner and denatured alcohol, using 00 steel wool. It's a slow job, but this alone should lighten the paneling considerably.
