How much mileage can I get out of one piece of paper on a drum sander? I'm talking about rough sanding here--maybe 36 grit. Is there a square footage formula that is generally followed? Thanks. I'm doing a 140 sq ft room (to start).

Go to www.finishingwoodfloors.com where you will find info on sanding equipment. See the TIPS for the different grits required for finishing. It is best to have too much sandpaper than too little. Sandpaper will need to be changed as needed. How long it lasts will depend on how rough the floor is and how much sanding you do. The sanding operation should remove less than 1/32" of wood. If you are renting a machine, most rental places will take back unused sandpaper.

As you skip from coarse to medium to fine grits, it is recommended that you do not skip more than one intermediate grit. (Example: 40 skip 50 use 60; 60 skip 80 use 100)
