I have an old inexpensive console table that I would like to restain a darker color to match current furniture. It appears to have a lacquer finish. Do I have to strip this or can I just sand and restain darker?
Also, a newer kitchen table and chairs in a painted finish that I would also like to repaint in a darker color - same question - do I have to strip or can I just sand and repaint? After I repaint, do I have to seal? With what? Thanks in advance.

Good news & bad news. The good news about the chairs is you can just sand to scuff the current finish, then prime and paint.
The bad news is stain works on wood - you'll have to strip the console in order to stain it a darker color.
