I recently bought a set of softwood nesting tables that I will be using around the living room. However, the tallest one is a couple of inches TOO tall, and I want to cut down the legs a bit. I'm aware that it can be very tricky to do this and keep the table level (oops, that one is a bit tall, cut it down, oops, now it's too short, cut the others, oops...)

I'd like to know if there's some technique one can use to mark the correct cutting place for all four legs so that the result is a level table. (I don't care that they won't nest anymore.) Thanks.

Steve:

You can use a variation of the method I use to level table legs.

Instead of trying to measure exactly the same distance on each of four legs, but a piece of 1" dowel rod the length you want to lower the legs.

Stand this on end beside each leg, 'rolling' it around the leg and marking (at the top) as you go.

This will at least insure the marks are all at the same level - now it's up to your steady hand when you cut!

PS - depending on the style of the legs, if you goof, you may be able to buy the inserts normally used to level refrigerators and put them in the legs - the adjust easily.

George,

Thanks - that's a good idea - I'll try it. No guarantees about the "steady hand", though! :D
