has been around for 10yrs or more . Do these dvds require the newer types of tv's and hookups? Is there some other problem maybe? I appreciate any suggestions......thank you.....

Yea that TV is too old to receive this kind of signal. You might try running the DVD through a VCR first. That may work, but the signal is going to degrade.
