View Full Version : Weep holes or missing mortar?

My circa 1900 home is built with true brick walls (not veneer over framing). Every so often, there is a gap where a vertical strip of mortar is missing between 2 bricks on the same course. Something about the looks of the gaps makes me think they are deliberate, i.e. they were left to allow water to flow or evaporate out from bewteen the layers of brick.

I have seen a good bit of the inside of the brick due to plaster repairs, and have not found any sign of water damage. I'd like to seal the holes in the interest of reducing air infiltration, but don't want to risk water accumulating and freezing between brick.

Can any masons tell me if brick needs weep/ventilation holes or if I'm reading to much into damaged mortar?

TIA:confused:

I've seen this on many buildings in chicago however not quite so old. Shouldn't matter. Those gaps are weeps and they shouldn't be a problem. They should be approx every 40" and clean of debris. Watch out for water penetration from the exterior i.e. wind driven rain, snow build up etc. As far as the remedy; it would be best to cover the joints and install weep holes. Most of the time that won't cause problems but if you're in a situation where water can readily penetrate the wall at the weep hole level look out. The water can penetrate, freeze, and displace the brick. Have a look, are the bricks shifting at all. Any stress cracks in the foundation or masonry close to the holes?

You answered your own question! You said, "a vertical strip of mortar is missing between 2 bricks on the same course." You've described WEEP HOLES perfectly. WEEP HOLES are always "HEAD JOINTS" (vertical joints) typically placed on the same course. Don't fill them in!

Your circa 1900 home has lasted 100 years! There may be some mortar that needs repointing... on other courses... but not that one.

Good luck. Remember, masonry lasts lifetimes!
