We've added new oak custom cabinets to an enlarged kitchen with existing oak cabinets (17 years). The new cabinet stain does not match the old (much lighter than the old) even though an existing door was given to the cabinet maker to use in matching.
Other than completely stripping the old cabinets and re doing them, is there any other process available to lighten the old cabinets?

Color matching can be a real problem. If you gave the 'cabinet maker' a sample to match, however, he should have come a lot closer than you indicated.
To answer your question, however, stripping and bleaching is the only way I know of to lighten cabinets. It would be easier to darken the new cabinets. Your 'cabinet maker' should make an effort to reconcile the difference in color.
