I have recently purchased a home built in 1885. I've torn up the floor down to the pine subfloor which is 5" wide pine, tongue & groove. It's in good shape and I would like to refinish it. Can this be done or is it not recommended?

It certainly can be done. In the old homes in the historical districts it is common practice. They are often discolored and filled with nail holes, gouges, and cracks that you can see the cellar through but thats what gives them character.
