when is the best time to prune blue bell hydrengea and ruby red clethra to get the most blooms for summer?

I have a large variety of Hydrangea and do heavy pruning only in the late fall, early winter. Upon the arrival of Spring I cutback only the dead "wood" just above the first bud on the plant.
