Looking for repair/reliability info of rear projection (65" Mits) vs front projectors (sharp xv-2700) figuring the startup cost are abt the same. Going into a finished basement, would HATE to lug the Mits. out once its in, but not sure of quality and/or reliability of the front projector, cant find enough info on the net. Thanks for any help you may have.

IMO, front projectors are simpler, no mirrors and all,
although there is more cabling, and the projector in
the way, one way or another.

Good Morning, MJM:

The advantage of a rear projection unit is compact size. The projector is built into the cabinet and the optics are transferred by mirrors. This is something to consider when space is a problem and viewing distance is limited.

In a front projection system, the projector has to be hung from the ceiling and, of course, you have to provide power in that area. For a front projection system, you need about 14' of projection distance to fill a 100 inch diagonal screen. I would use this installation for larger rooms. And, of course, you have to make sure folks don't walk in front of the projector.

Conversely, for picture clarity, a good 2000 Ansi-Lumen projector
is brighter, clearer, and far superior to the self contained units using LCD technology. Some of the more expensive units in this series do nice things to computer graphics. Straight NTSC video usually has a scan doubler installed to enhance video to a VGA
format.
