I'm planning to install a 3/4 inch hardwood floor in a kitchen. Does anyone know if I can install it over the exisiting vinyl tile floor? It would save me ton of work.

Thanks

Hardwood can be installed over vinyl or linoleum. This is highly recommended if the vinyl or linoleum contain asbestos. The concern is what is underneath the vinyl. 5/8" plywood is preferred for nailing down hardwood. 3/4" OSB is considered acceptable by some. Particle board or other type of composition subfloor is not acceptable because it will not hold nails. If you do not have recommended subfloor, the vinyl and subfloor must be removed or new subfloor installed over the vinyl. If vinyl is cushioned it will result in movement of boards and is not recommended. Take into consideration increased height of floor if install new subfloor on top of old. If flooring contains asbestos, it is best to cover it over. Go to www.doityourself.com/home-safety to learn about asbestos safety test kits. Go to www.installingwoodfloors.com for helpful info.
