I have a Sony DVD player. About two years old. I'll be watching a DVD and suddenly it will jump from say chapter 2 to chapter 6 with no warning. Is this as simple to fix as cleaning the lens? Once in a very long while the audio will be about one second out of sync with the video but this is fixed by pausing the DVD and then pressing play again. Any idea what causes this? Thanks for your help.

The optics in these devices travel on a sled and are driven by a worm gear setup. It’s possible that the cabling to the optics is in a bind or the sled it’s self has some foreign matter or dry spot on it. It could also be the optic tolerance levels are changing, do you have it setting close to a large TV or heat source. Or maybe where the heater vent can blow on it and cause it to get hot? Anything vibrating the table etc where it is setting? Is it under warranty? If it’s not very old it may be worth your while to have it looked at or crack the case and look at yourself for the above mentioned causes. I do not advise turn or resetting any pots or anything inside the device.
