This may sound like a stupid question but I'll ask it anyway:
My basement walls are composed of what look something like approximately 2ft x 2ft concrete squares. What are these called?
I' d like to be able to refer to them properly for future questions. Thanks.

No question is stupid... only the one not asked.
But I have questions for you...
1) Has your basement been monolithic poured with removeable steel panels?
2) Is it an individual concrete block mortared in place?
3) How old is the structure?
4) Is there something wrong with the wall causing you problems?

I don't know the answers to all your questions but I'll try:
I see no residual steel to suggest it was poured
The structure is about 45 years old
The problem I'm having is when I tried to powder nail furring strips into the wall the charges I used were too strong & blew a good sized hole in the wall (not through) instead of sticking in the wall.
I don't know if their individual blocks but they appear to have "seams" whether or not they were individual blocks or poured I'm not sure. I'll try measuring their exact dimensions as maybe this will help clear matters up.
