After being sanded and treated with polyurethane, my oak floor has black stains around all of the nail holes left by the carpet and linoleum. Is there a way of removing them? Should the holes have been filled with wood putty before the finish was put on, and is it too late to add it now? Can marks made by the sander be removed? In short, once a floor has been refinished, what can be done about the flaws that remain?

If the flaws are in the wood (and the ones you mentioned are) the only way they can be repaired is to strip the floor to get to the wood.

The black marks can be bleached out (oxalic acid0. the sanding marks can be removed by re-sanding more carefully with a finer grit.

The finish, however, must be removed first.
