I am removing slate that was placed on a new oak floor 35 years ago. My goal is to have a nice looking polyurethaned hardwood floor. However, the areas directly beneath the mortar joints have white stains (probably leaching from the mortar) which penetrate deeper than 1/8". (I stopped in the test section at 1/8".) Is there anything I can do to get the desired result short of replacing the oak floor?

Mortar, I believe, has lime in it. Lime eats and bleaches wood. I don't know of anything you can do to restore it. Maybe you could remove the flooring and flip the boards over and reinstall. There will likely be nail holes to contend with. Maybe someone will have another idea. Good luck.

Typically, stains that can not be sanded out of hardwood floors will require replacing the wood or recovering.

This may seem silly, but least amount of work 1st. If there is enough wood to experiment on, would making a paste or thin solution with lime bleach wood to uniform color? Assuming it can be stained to desired color afterwards. Glasses, gloves and fresh air of course!
