I'll try your lacquer thinner method next, although I think it may not work, as the "finish", whatever it was, has already dried and chipped away. I suspect the white mark is in the wood itself. I'll try it though.
Here's another furniture (wood) question for you, Mr. Woodworks Professor:
I have a cabinet that has a glass door on the front. The cabinet was unfinished wood (oak, I believe), and has never been finished, although it may have been sealed with something. I've had it for about 15 years. I noticed that when I open the door, the inside has a real musty smell that I don't like. (The shelves inside the door are the same wood, unfinished). The things in the shelves are just trinkets that wouldn't smell. I realize I could leave the door open and eventually the smell might "air" out, but it would take some time, and I don't really want the door open all the time. Do you know of anything that might get rid of this smell? I considered painting the inside, but really don't want to, I like the wood. Thanks again and will let you know what happens with the coffee table.:)

Judy:

The odor is probably coming from a bacteria or fungus that also produces mold.

A thorough cleaning of the inside with a bleach/water combination (50:50) should eliminate the cause, as well as the present odor.

Don't let the wood stay wet, and (obviously) don't leave the bleach mixture on the wood for any length of time.
