In the same bathroom, it takes 1-2 minutes for hot water to start flowing in my sink (it just runs cold until then), and 20-30 seconds for the hot water to start in the shower. The shower is about 5 feet from the sink Can someone help me understand this problem, please?

It's probably the way they ran the pipes to the shower and the sink. You could reconfigure your pipes and that would depend on how accessible they are.

You can go toLaing Thermotech (http://www.autocirc.com/Autocirc.htm) and there is a product that will resolve your problem with waiting for hot water.

My house has the same thing.
I believe it is because the water sitting in the pipe cools.
The shower takes less time because much more water moves
through it than you sink.

It probably takes longest in the morning when you first use it.
Check the location of you hot water tank. If it is like mine. The tank is at the other end of the house.
