Hello: J. Kenney

Getting ripped off is to broad and generic a phrase and does not always reflect or imply the real truth. However, it could be fact if there isn't enough competition in the area.

The better phrase, in my opinion, is paying for professional services. Especially if the job is difficult, time consuming, dirty, etc. etc. etc. and or specialized skills and tools are needed.

If the cleaning equipment is available for daily rental at the local rental yard, you may want to and or can perform the cleaning task yourself.

Depending upon the ducting locations, type of ducting material and conditions of the ducting, labor time, among other factors, determines the difficulty of the project and the final cost.

The project could be really easy or as difficult as falling thru the ceiling....:(....or doing your own root canal on yourself....:D
Sometimes, hiring a professional is worth the costs....:)

Duct cleaning is a specialized field, and requires the right equipment, and is time consuming. If your system is 10 to 15 yrs. old, you may want to have them cleaned..But please do not expect your home not to be dusty after they are cleaned. That's how they got that way, by circulating the air in your home. Through the years, that is the biggest complaint from consumers about duct cleaning, "My house is still dusty, it was a rip off."
