I think my vertical fabric blinds are beyond cleaning (they are embedded with dust from refinishing my floor.) I have removed them from the hardware. Is it possible to save money by buying replacement vanes(?) to fit the existing hardware?

I took one of my vanes to Lowe's and they cut it to the same size. A package has about 15 vanes. Home Depot also stock vanes, and provides cutting services too, for free.

You're not going to find fabric vanes at Home Depot. If you want fabric you must go to store that specializes in window treatments. You will save some money but compare the price of a complete vertical also.

I had a similar problem. Spring Cleaning... I took my blinds down and hung them from my deck, then sprayed them down with "Mean Green" and then the water hose. It worked Great! Some of the really dirty ones I took a cotton mop and rubbed them down before the final rinse. Let the sun and air dry the blinds for about an hour (on a warm, sunny day) and hang them back inside.

It's always cheaper to replace/cutdown vanes rather than purchasing a new blind alltogether. The track is the most expensive part unless you're looking at the higher line vanes. You can go to your local fabricater of verticals, and ask to see their discontinued line and get them for a fraction of the cost.
Remember that even if your track is in sad shape, if it's not more than , aprox 5-6 years old, usually you can just get replacement parts, or have the track "Re-gut" for next to nothing. You don't want to replace the track unless it's had its day, or you simply want a new one. You'd be suprised at the discontinueds that end up in the dumpster.

I fill the bathtub with warm warm and laundry detergent. then I put the fabric vanes in and swish them around. they get really clean! do a clear water rinse and then pin them to a clothes line to dry. the only problem i have found is the thread that is used to sew the weight pockets on the bottoms has rotted from the sunlight. They needed to be resewn. Just a simple straight stitch on the sewing machine. If you don't sew, then its not so simple.
