I just had vinyl flooring in my dining room removed and the underlying red oak floor refinished. It was treated with three coats of polyurethane (fast-drying, because it only took an afternoon before we were allowed to walk on it) but the surface is rough. The professional who did it says the grain must have raised, and suggests waxing it. This seems to defeat the purpose of using the polyurethane. What do you think caused the roughness, and how would you deal with it?

The "professional" who did this job didn't do it right.

IF the polyurethane was waterbased the "professional" should have known the grain would be rasied and sanded more completely after the first coat. Whether oil based or waterbased, polyurethane REQUIRES sanding between every coat.

My bet is this "professional" didn't sand at all after he started putting finish down and THAT'S the reason for the roughness.

Your "professional" isn't.
