Hi, we have 30 year old kitchen cabinet in excellent shape. They are stained and varnished (with shellac???) They have gotten very dirty especially around the knobs. The dirt doesn't come off. Any suggestions??? (Without sanding down and refinishing.) It was suggested to use denatured alchohol to remove the finish, would this work?? Thank you!!

Dana:

If the original finish was shellac, denatured alcohol will remove it. If all your cabinets need is a good cleaning, however, I'd try this first, on one expecially dirty door.

Take the door down and remove the knob (pull). Make a paste of baking soda and water and use a dmap sponge with this mix to scrub down the entire door.

After you've removed all the dirst (and this will) go over the entire door with Turtle Wax Polishing Compound and Scratch Remover to restore the sheen. Just follow the directions on the can.

It's labor intensive, but it should work without a lot of the mess associated with a complete refinishing job...
