 The pilot in my very old forced air furnace is off.
Tried to relight it but it does not stay lit. The fan can be switched
on from either the switch on the furnace or from the thermostat.
i.e. there is power to the furnace. Appreciate any feedback on how to solve this problem.

Try replacing your Thermocoupling. The pilot flame heats this up, and puts out a small amount of current, this holds open the Pilot circuit < you are doing this when holding the red button in > once it gets hot... are you holding for 1 minute

Thanks R-12guy. Yes, I did keep the red button depressed for
more than a few minutes - enough to get the thermocoupling red hot. Will try replacing the thermocoupling. This may seem a silly
question but does the furnace operate on just one fuse or two?
I know from past experience that the clothes dryer has two fuses. Just want to make sure that this is not an electrical problem.

you normally find two fuses on 240 volt circuits, but is still possable for your 120 volt furnace to have a box with two fuses, some old timers used the old knife switch boxs with two fuses, for furnaces. But thats not what your problem is.... get you a thermocoupling............
